The rumour mill has hotted up with the gaming community now getting confirmed reports of the actual hardware found inside Microsoft's next-gen console
The next-generation Xbox otherwise known as theXbox 720 could be up to six times more powerful than the current generation and will potentially have considerable more grunt than the upcomingNintendo Wii U.
This comes after sources close to Fudzilla have confirmed that the the SoC (System on Chip) has already entered the initial stages of production and will be hitting full-scale production in late 2012, the site goes on to talk more about the actual CPU that could be used.
"If speculation is correct, which our sources believe it is, the power behind the next Xbox will be a PowerPC CPU that is married to an ATI Southern Islands GPU, or modified 7000 series."
Expert on all things gaming, CVG's Andy Robinson puts forward an alternative however, suggesting that the hardware inside the Xbox will actually depend a lot on whether the company plans to release a Kinect 2 with the console.
"A lot depends on whether or not Microsoft decides to bundle a ‘Kinect 2’ with the next Xbox, and if it will sport sufficient built in components or be powered by the Xbox 720 hardware itself."
Potentially this could see a lower-specced Xbox than predicted but with a Kinect 2 containing a lot of the grunt it requires inside the peripheral itself.
IGN believe this means the next-gen console will be siginificantly more powerful than first expected with the console set to exceed the current Xbox six times over and will also be well ahead of the upcoming Nintendo Wii U.
Elsewhere in an interview with Eurogamer, John Carmack, the man behing Doom and Quake has speculated on the upcoming Xbox 720 and Sony PS4 saying
“The next-generation will be here soon, a couple of years. It'll be another ten times as powerful as this generation. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."
His comments come as chatter about the Xbox 720 reached new heights earlier this week, with Crysis 2 developer Crytek saying the hub would be outed at E3 2012. Sony has already admitted that it’s started work on what will likely become PS4.
